Tap Water vs Filtered Water for Plants: Does It Matter?

For most houseplants, ordinary tap water is fine. The "let it sit out overnight" myth

Chloramine behaves differently by design. Fluoride sensitivity is genus-specific, not universal

This is the part that gets over-generalized into "houseplants hate tap water," which is not accurate. Fluoride and salt sensitivity shows up in a specific, named handful of plants, not across houseplants as a category.

NC State Extension's Gardener Plant Toolbox states plainly for dracaena: "These plants are sensitive to tap water that contains salts, chlorine, and fluoride and can cause browning of the leaf tips," and recommends filtered water or rainwater as the fix. Hard water and the white crust on soil (a different problem than fluoride)

Hard water does not usually cause leaf-tip burn. It causes a visible, physical buildup instead. The fix does not require switching your water source.
