How Long to Run a Grow Light Each Day
For ordinary foliage houseplants, published extension guidance lands on 12 to 14 hours a day, with 16 hours as a ceiling. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says it is best to supply light 12 to 14 hours a day, and that home gardeners can run it for as little as 10 hours and no more than 16. Illinois Extension says 14 to 16 hours is sufficient and warns not to exceed 16, because plants need a rest period. Mississippi State University Extension gives about 12 to 14 hours for good growth. Those are the numbers, and they agree more than they disagree.
What they cannot tell you is whether your light is strong enough for those hours to add up to anything, and that is the part this article is really about.
Why Three Sources Give Slightly Different Ranges
None of them is contradicting the others. They are answering slightly different questions.
Iowa State's 12 to 14 hours is written for indoor plants generally, with 10 hours as the floor for a home grower and 16 as the maximum. Illinois Extension's 14 to 16 hours leans toward plants that need more, and it is the one that states the ceiling most firmly: do not expose plants to more than 16 hours of light since they need a rest period too. Mississippi State's 12 to 14 hours, in its publication Care and Selection of Indoor Plants (P1012), sits in the middle.
Take the overlap and you get a defensible default for a beginner: run it 12 to 14 hours, use a timer, and do not go past 16.
Hours Are Only Half of the Equation
This is the thing almost nothing in the search results explains, and it is why two people can both run a light for 12 hours and get completely different plants.
Light delivered to a plant is measured two ways. PPFD is the instant intensity, in micromoles per square meter per second (µmol/m²/s). DLI, the daily light integral, is the total for the day, in moles per square meter per day (mol/m²/day). Hours convert one into the other.
Virginia Cooperative Extension publishes the formula in Calculating and Using Daily Light Integral (DLI): An Introductory Guide (SPES-720NP, Eric Stallknecht, August 2025):
DLI = (PPFD × 3,600 × operating hours) ÷ 1,000,000
That is one multiplication and one division, and it turns an abstract setting into a number you can compare against a published target.
Iowa State Extension's DLI bands for indoor plants are the targets:
- Low light foliage houseplants: 3 to 6 mol/m²/day
- Foliage and flowering houseplants, cuttings and seedlings: 6 to 10 mol/m²/day
- Flowering houseplants, succulents, herbs and vegetables: 12 to 16 mol/m²/day
- The most demanding herbs, fruits and vegetables: 18 to 30 mol/m²/day
A worked example, using an assumed input
The following uses a made-up PPFD figure to show the arithmetic. It is not a measurement of any particular product, and you would substitute your own fixture's published figure at your own hanging distance.
Suppose the light delivers 100 µmol/m²/s at the top of the plant.
- At 12 hours: 100 × 3,600 × 12 ÷ 1,000,000 = 4.3 mol/m²/day
- At 14 hours: 5.0 mol/m²/day
- At 16 hours: 5.8 mol/m²/day
All three land inside Iowa State's low light foliage band of 3 to 6. So for a pothos or a snake plant, that fixture at that distance is doing its job anywhere in the normal hours range, and stretching from 12 hours to 16 buys you very little.
Now suppose the light only manages 50 µmol/m²/s at the plant, which is what happens when a small fixture is hung too far away.
- At 12 hours: 2.2 mol/m²/day, below the low light band.
- At 16 hours: 2.9 mol/m²/day, still below it.
That is the honest answer to "should I just run it longer". Running longer helps, up to the ceiling, and then it stops helping. If the intensity is too low, no legal number of hours rescues it, and the fix is distance or a different fixture rather than the timer.
Why the 16 Hour Ceiling Exists
Plants are not solar panels. They run processes in the dark that they do not run in the light, and both extension pages above make the same point in plain language: they need a rest period.
There is a second, more practical reason to respect the ceiling. Many houseplants take seasonal cues from day length, and holding them at near-continuous light removes a signal they use. For a foliage plant in a living room this is rarely dramatic, but it is a real reason not to treat 24 hours as free growth. If your instinct is to leave the light on permanently, that question has enough behind it to deserve its own answer, and the short version is that the ceiling is there for a reason.
Matching Hours to the Plant You Actually Own
Low light foliage plants, the ones people mostly own, sit in the 3 to 6 mol/m²/day band. Twelve hours is usually plenty, and there is little to gain from more. Two of the most forgiving are covered in snake plant care and pothos care.
Plants you want to flower, and succulents, sit much higher, at 12 to 16 mol/m²/day by Iowa State's bands. Here the hours matter more, and 14 hours is a sensible working figure, but the intensity has to be there first. A weak light run for 14 hours will not reach that band, as the arithmetic above shows.
Seedlings and cuttings sit at 6 to 10 mol/m²/day. They are also the case where longer hours are conventional: Purdue University's Starting Seed Indoors (HO-14-W, Rosie Lerner) recommends keeping lights on 14 to 16 hours each day, with seedlings placed 3 to 4 inches from fluorescent tubes.
Use a Timer, Not Your Memory
Consistency matters more than the exact figure inside the range. A plant on a light that runs 14 hours some days and 4 hours on the days you forget is effectively on a much lower average, and you will misread the result as the fixture being weak.
A mechanical or plug-in timer removes the variable entirely and costs almost nothing. Set it once and leave it. Any of the hours in the ranges above will work; what will not work is a schedule that depends on you being home.
Two small practical notes. Run the light during the day rather than at night if you can, because it makes problems easier to notice and is easier to live with. Signs You Have the Hours Wrong
Too few hours, or too little light overall, shows up as stretched stems with wide gaps between the leaves, new leaves smaller than old ones, and growth that has simply stopped during the growing season.
